PERMA-HAND Suture is a nonabsorbable, sterile, surgical suture composed of an organic protein called fibroin.
This protein is derived from the domesticated species Bombyx mori (B. mori) of the family Bombycidae.
Silk for braided sutures is processed to remove the natural waxes and gums, coated with wax or silicone and is available undyed and dyed black.
PERMA-HAND Suture is indicated for use in general soft tissue approximating and/or ligation, including use in cardiovascular, ophthalmic, and neurological procedures.
Benefits of Perma Silk Sutures
It’s unknown how long human or animal wounds have been sealed with thread and needle but today there have been great advances in different types of medical sutures for internal and external wounds and surgical treatments.
There are dozens of different types of medical sutures, including the Ethicon Perma hand silk sutures.
Ethicon is a company that makes sutures and is a subsidiary of the big Johnson and Johnson firm.
They manufacture a wide range of medical sutures, but one particular type that is popular is the Perma hand silk suture.
What Are Ethicon Perma Hand Silk Sutures?
In the past, sutures have been made from a wide range of threads. Often doctors or surgeons would use what was available during the time, perhaps even creating their own sutures.
Before polyester was invented, cotton, catgut, and even silk was used. Today, the benefits of natural silk are still appreciated, despite the manufacturing of poly-based sutures.
What Are Silk Sutures Made from?
Silk sutures are made of silk fibres that have been spun by the silkworm larvae.
There is still an intricate manufacturing process to create fine sutures that are not only sterilised but also consistent in each box so the surgeon always knows what to expect.
The silk materials are processed so that the natural waxes and sericin gum are removed. The silk is then coated with a substance that may be oil, wax, or silicone.
There are even different types of silk sutures. The silk can be made into twisted filaments or braided filaments.
What Are the Benefits of Silk Sutures?
Silk sutures are considered non-absorbable, but over time, such as two years, they actually disappear from the body’s tissues.
This makes it slowly absorbing and susceptible to enzymatic degradation. It’s often used for cardiovascular or ophthalmic procedures where tissue needs to be secured, and the sutures must remain in place for up to a year to allow it to heal, but after that time, they are absorbed by the surrounding tissue.
The additional benefit is that they don’t have to be removed as they biodegrade over time. Silk sutures offer good tensile strength so they don’t weaken through the healing process.
They are easy to handle and offer excellent knot security so the knot doesn’t detach before the wound has a chance to heal.
