In the past, medical or surgical sutures consisted of one type of material.
As doctors realised the benefits of sutures – primarily that the patient wouldn’t lose as much blood, and the wound would heal a lot faster – they experimented with creating other types of sutures.
Today, there are dozens of different types of sutures, for small wounds to large wounds, as well as internal dissolvable sutures for soft tissue surgeries. Ethicon has one type of useful sutures called Stratafix.
This type of suture is manufactured by the Johnson and Johnson line of Ethicon sutures in Somerville, New Jersey.
The Stratafix sutures have been engineered for soft tissue connections inside the body.
This includes the tissues that surround the organs, including the heart, blood vessels, fats, nerves, tendons, and tissues surrounding the bones and joints. This type of suture is fully dissolvable, making it suitable for soft tissue connection.
There is no need to use permanent sutures which can cause lingering pain inside the body, as these do dissolve over time, so the internal organs can resume normal functioning.
Other Benefits of Stratafix Sutures
There are many benefits to the stratafix sutures that are made with pdo suture material.
These types of sutures are knotless, so the surgeon doesn’t have to tie knots in them to secure them after the internal surgery. The sutures are composed of barbed material that secures together quickly.
This is a special anchor technology that helps secure two sides of tissue together quickly, without having to tie knots or trim materials. These sutures are also dyed a special violet colour, and made from pdo, or polyester p-dioxanone materials.
This makes securing them inside the body much simpler.
Yes, there are a wide range of sizes and lengths of stratafix suture sizes. These can vary from 28 cm to 48 cm to 60 cm and 72 cm. Most packages contain amounts of 12.
You can stock up on more than one size, so you have everything that your surgical team requires.

All About Stratafix Spiral PDO Sutures
Ethicon manufactures a wide range of surgical sutures for all types of internal or external wound care and tissue repair.
One type of sutures manufactured by this company is the Stratafix Spiral PDO. These are knotless tissue control devices made by a synthetic absorbable material.

The stratafix spiral sutures are made from a barbed suture material, rather than being smooth monofilament.
In certain surgical procedures, there can be benefits to using this type of suture, rather than going to the difficulty of trying to tie a knot. Instead of tying surgical knots, the barbs hold the two edges of the tissue together.
While the barbed type of sutures is not as strong as monofilament in the same size, tying knots in sutures can also reduce the strength.
This type of suture is made of a dyed or violet polyester material. This material is composed of p-dioxanone. This type of material has been proven to be nonantigenic and is less likely to cause a tissue reaction in sensitive patients.
There are six different sizes and tensile strengths of sutures to use. They start at 5-0 with a tensile strength of 0.68, 4-0 at 0.95, 3-0 at 1.77, 2-0 at 2.68, 0 at 3.90, and 1 at a suture tensile strength of 5.08.
When Are Stratafix Spiral PDO Suture Needles Used?
These types of sutures are used for soft tissue procedures where the sutures need to be absorbable over time, and when it may be difficult to knot the suture material.
It’s best for tissue procedures that will heal up within six weeks. Beyond that timeframe, other types of sutures will be suitable.
The Stratafix Spiral PDO sutures are not recommended to secure any type of prosthetic devices, heart valves or synthetic grafts, or in surgery where the sutures need to stay in place until they are manually removed.
What Types of Suture Needles to Use?
There is no need to use additional needles with the Stratafix sutures as they are attached on each end with a needle.
The stratafix spiral pdo suture needles save time from having to attach a needle, and are also pre-sterilised so that the patient isn’t exposed to harmful microorganisms due to additional sterilisation that is required when the needle must be attached manually.
